How to Overcome a Depressing Day (When Your Heart Just Hurts)

Jun 18, 2025

We all have those days. The ones where getting out of bed feels like a battle. When your heart is heavy, your mind won’t stop overthinking, and the silence of your life feels louder than ever. Whether it’s the pain of heartbreak, the weight of starting over, or the ache of loneliness, I want you to know—you are not alone.

I’ve lived those days, too. The days when I whispered prayers through tears, when I didn’t want to be strong anymore, and all I wanted was someone to hug me and say, “It’s going to be okay.” If that’s where you are today, this post is your hug.

Here’s how I lift myself from the dumps, one gentle step at a time—with God’s help and a whole lot of grace.

1. Start by Giving Yourself Permission to Feel

Don’t rush past the sadness. You’re not weak for having emotions—you’re human. God isn’t asking you to pretend. In fact, Psalm 34:18 reminds us:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Cry. Journal. Breathe. Let the tears come. Let the heaviness be felt. Then... breathe again. You’re still here. That means there’s still purpose.

2. Turn on the Word—Not the World

Skip the endless scrolling or sad songs today. Instead, tune into a sermon, devotional, or worship playlist. One of my go-to’s? Joyce Meyer or Sarah Jakes Roberts on YouTube.

Even just one scripture can shift your atmosphere. Try this one:
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6

Repeat it until your spirit believes it.

3. Write It Out (Let God Read Your Journal)

Grab your journal and write a raw letter to God. Tell Him exactly what hurts. What you're afraid of. What you're longing for.

Then write back as if God were speaking directly to your heart:

“My daughter, I see your pain. I’m still working. You are not forgotten.”

4. Move Your Body, Even if It's Just a Walk to the Mailbox

Depression thrives in stillness. Put on something soft and walk around the block. Feel the sun on your face. Stretch. Dance in your living room to your favorite song. Motion activates emotion.

Even if your body is tired, your soul will thank you.

5. Do One Thing That Feels Like Love

This isn’t about productivity. It’s about self-kindness.

  • Take a long bath with bubbles and gospel music.

  • Light your favorite candle.

  • Put on a pretty outfit even if you're not going anywhere.

  • Make a cup of tea and wrap up in your softest blanket.

You deserve beauty—even on your worst days.

6. Text a Safe Friend

Sometimes we just need to say, “I’m not okay.” Text a trusted sister and let her know you need a little light today. Vulnerability is strength. You don’t have to carry this alone.

And if you don’t have someone? I promise, I’m praying for you right now. God always hears the silent cries.

7. Remember: This Is Temporary

Your life will not always look like this. You are allowed to dream again. To feel joy again. To rise again.

Jesus didn’t just conquer death—He conquered every dark, lonely, empty place we’d ever find ourselves in.

You’re not buried, Sis. You’re planted. ๐ŸŒฑ
And baby girl, you’re going to bloom.

๐Ÿ’• You’re Not Alone

If today is a hard one, I want you to print this out, save it, or bookmark it. Read it every time your heart aches. You are loved. You are still here. And healing is still happening.
